Remote-hire I-9 verification
When a new employee works far from the employer, the employer can ask an authorized representative to examine the employee's identity and work-authorization documents in person and complete the employer section of Form I-9.
How it works
- The employer or the new employee sends a request with the employer's instructions.
- We meet the new employee, examine the original documents they choose to present, and complete the employer section as the employer instructs.
- We return the completed form as the employer asks. The employer remains responsible for the Form I-9.
Good to know
- This is not a notarization, and the form is not notarized.
- We can't tell the employee which documents to present; Form I-9 lists the acceptable documents.
Who it helps
Employees
If you're starting a job with an employer that isn't nearby, we meet you, look at your original documents, and complete the employer's part of the form as your employer instructs, so you don't have to travel to their office.
Employers
When a new hire works far from your office, we act as your authorized representative: we examine the employee's original documents in person and complete Section 2 following your instructions. You stay responsible for the Form I-9.
Where we can meet
Anywhere in the Charlotte metro area where the employee can bring their original documents.
The employee's home
Often the easiest: we come to the new employee at a time that suits them.
Offices and businesses
A coworking space, a client site, or another business location.
Public places and hotels
A library, coffee shop, or hotel lobby, for example when the employee is new to the area.
Airports
In a public area, when the employee is traveling for the new job.
Paper or electronic Form I-9
Paper Form I-9
We complete the employer section on the paper form and return it the way the employer asks: in person, by scan, or by shipping.
Electronic Form I-9
Many employers use an online I-9 system. With the access the employer gives us for that appointment, we complete the employer section in their system after examining the documents in person.
Extra services we can add
Printing
The employer can send us the form, and we bring it printed.
Scanning
We scan the completed form so the employer receives it right away.
Shipping
We can ship the original completed form to the employer.
