What to expect at an I-9 verification for a remote hire
For new employees whose employer is far away: how an in-person I-9 document check with an authorized representative works.
Every new employee in the United States completes Form I-9. When the employer isn't nearby, the employer can ask someone near the new employee to examine their documents in person on the employer's behalf. That person is called an authorized representative.
Before the appointment
- Complete your section of Form I-9 (Section 1) as your employer instructs.
- Choose which original documents you will present from the lists of acceptable documents on the form. We can't choose them for you.
- Bring the originals. Photocopies and photos aren't accepted, with a few exceptions your employer will tell you about.
At the appointment
We look at your original documents in person and complete the employer section (Section 2) exactly as your employer instructs. It usually takes a few minutes.
After the appointment
We return the form to your employer the way they asked. Your employer stays responsible for the Form I-9 and for any questions about it.
Good to know
An I-9 verification isn't a notarization: the form isn't notarized and doesn't get a notary seal.
